Tiny holes in shingles are sneaky because they can cause rot a leaky roof and other damage for years before you notice the obvious signs of a leak. And exposed misplaced roofing repair nails should be pulled and the holes patched. Once you ve found the leak you can make a temporary leak patch from some plywood or shingle and some roofing tar. Small nail holes left behind from old vents satellite dish brackets or anything previously attached to the roof can allow water to enter and cause damage for years before leaking is noticed.

Hold it against the inside of the plywood by pulling up through the hole while driving deck screws through the roof and into the brace. Plug pinholes with roofing cement and patch holes up to about 3 4 inch in diameter with a patch from the same material as the flashing. Use a small trowel or caulk gun to apply 1 2 teaspoon of asphalt cement to the hole under the shingle.
