Sheathing should be a minimum of 19 32 inch thick. If it was originally secured using staples or 6d nails it must be completely re nailed to the new standard. Specifies the minimum sheathing thickness for framing spaced 24 inches on center based on exposure category and wind speed. The requirement became effective on october 1 2007.

Cap nail shank shall have a length sufficient to penetrate through the roof sheathing or not less than 3 4 inch into the roof sheathing. The typical thickness range for sheathing is 3 8 to 3 4 inch. 1 inch 25 4 mm. Installation details shall conform to sections 2304 7 1 and 2304 7 2 for floor and roof sheathing respectively.

The cap nail shank shall be not less than 0 083 inch for ring shank cap nails and 0 091 inch for smooth shank cap nails. Fasteners for asphalt shingles shall be galvanized stainless steel aluminum or copper roofing nails minimum 12 gage 0 105 inch 2 67 mm shank with a minimum 3 8 inch diameter 9 5 mm head of a length to penetrate through the roofing materials and a minimum of 3 4 inch 19 1 mm into the roof sheathing. Roof sheathing comes in grid marked 4 by 8 foot sheets and should be installed perpendicular to the frame. Where the roof sheathing is less than 3 4 inch 19 1 mm thick the nails shall penetrate through the sheathing.

This minimum will only work if the rafters are set 16 inches apart at most and if the roof doesn t have too much load. 8d ring shank nails should be used instead. For closed valleys valley lining of one ply of smooth roll roofing complying with astm d 6380 classsand atleast36 inches 914 mm wide or valley lining as described in item 1 or 2 above shall be permitted. Roof sheathing thickness unlike with plywood siding the plywood sheet to be used for sheathing should be at least 3 8 inch thick.

Floor or roof sheathing conforming with this table shall be deemed to meet the design criteria of section 2304 7. An excerpt of table r803 2 2 is shown in the next column. While ring shank nails are still required the nail size depends on the sheathing thickness.
